UOG Hosts Lecture with Award-Winning Writer Verzemnieks
Verzemnieks will be the featured speaker in the 37th Presidential Lecture Series.
The University of Guam welcomes Inara Verzemnieks as the 37th speaker in the Presidential Lecture Series. The lecture will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Lecture Hall located on the UOG Campus. The title of her lecture is "The Many Words for Home: Writing to Capture the Complexities of Place, Identity & Family.”
“Our University community is excited to hear and learn from such an accomplished and creative writer,” said UOG President Thomas Krise.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
Humanities Guåhan
Verzemnieks is on-island as a featured author through Humanities Guåhan for a series of creative writing and journalism workshops and readings entitled, “I Come From Here: Portraying Place, Community and History.” Verzemnieks will be working with local students, journalists, and writers through writing workshops and master classes from September 10 to 15. Humanities Guåhan will also be hosting “An Evening with the Author” featuring Verzemnieks on September 13 at the Hyatt Regency Guam. About the Lecturer
Inara Verzemnieks is the author of the acclaimed memoir, Among the Living and the Dead: A Tale of Exile and Homecoming on the War Roads of Europe, and a 2007 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Feature Writing for her work in the Oregonian. Other awards include the Rona Jaffe Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Anslavs Eglitis and Veronika Janelsina Literary Prize. She currently teaches creative nonfiction at the University of Iowa, consistently ranked as the top school for creative writing in the nation.
