Are you:
- 45 years of age or older?
- Overweight?
- Physically active fewer than 3 times per week?
- In a family with a history of gestational diabetes?
These are all risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes.
Join Prevent T2 and lower your risk
Build healthy new habits that can help you prevent your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes through the Prevent T2 Program, a CDC-recognized diabetes prevention lifestyle change program offered by the Health & Wellness extension team at the University of Guam.
Eligibility
- 18 years or older
- Overweight (BMI of 25 kg/m2)
- Not diagnosed with T1 or T2 diabetes
- Not pregnant
- Meets one fo the following criteria:
- Diagnosed with prediabetes
- Previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes
- High risk on the Prediabetes Risk Test
Key components of the program
The CDC-approved curriculum for the Prevent T2 Program includes:
- Lessons in:
- Goal setting
- Weight management
- Being active
- Heart health
- Positive thinking
- Problem-solving skills
- Stress management
- Healthy eating
- A lifestyle coach, specially trained to lead the program, help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet goals, and keep you motivated. The coach will also facilitate discussions and help make the program fun and engaging.
- A support group of people with similar goals and challenges. Together, you can share ideas, celebrate successes, and work to overcome obstacles.
What you'll learn
In the first half of the program, you will learn how to:
- Eat healthy without giving up all the foods you love.
- Add physical activity to your life, even if you don’t think you have time.
- Cope with stress and challenges that can derail your hard work, like choosing healthy food when eating out.
In the second half of the program, you will learn how to:
- Enhance the skills you’ve learned so you can maintain the changes you’ve made.
- Get back on track if you stray from your plan (because everyone slips now and then).
Register for the Prevent T2 Program
Learn, laugh, share stories, try new things, and build new habits — all while lowering your risk of Type 2 diabetes and improving your health by registering for the Prevent T2 program through UOG Cooperative Extension.
One-year program
The program runs for one year. During the first six months of the program, you will meet about once a week. During the second six months, you will meet once or twice per month.
