What is Extension?
The idea behind extension is to extend practical, relevant, research-based information to the community. This is one of the three core purposes of Land Grant universities across the nation, along with agriculture and natural resources-related research and academic instruction. The cooperative extension system among agricultural colleges in the United States was created by the Smith-Lever Act of 1914.
The needs and concerns of the citizens of Guam and the broader Micronesian region and trends in consumer practices are what drive UOG's extension work. Extension programs and projects at the University of Guam focus on six issues of critical importance in the region.
What do we offer?
Our extension agents work to, first, learn about needs in the community within our critical focus areas and then to help community members make informed decisions and live healthy, productive, and sustainable lives. We do this by providing:
- non-formal workshops
- group and one-on-one trainings
- self-education materials
- and technical services
Our extension work is carried out in the following divisions: :
Agriculture & Natural Resources
Extension agents in our Agriculture & Natural Resources Division take a close look at the needs of local farmers and consumers and also the health of plants and animals living in Guam. They meet with farmers to help them solve the issues of growing crops in Guam's climate and environment. They also conduct variety trials to find the fruit and vegetable varieties most suitable to the soils and climate of Guam.
Our ANR agents specialize in:
- crop pests
- invasive species
- native plants
- diseases affecting crops, plants, and trees
- fruit and vegetable production
- plant health and nutrition
- sustainable production methods
- farm business management
- livestock care and meat processing
- ornamental horticulture
- food preservation
Family & Consumer Sciences
Extension agents in our Family & Consumer Sciences Division provide individuals and families with evidence-based knowledge to help them make informed decisions about their own health and well-being. As families thrive, communities thrive. When Guam's community thrives, all benefit.
Programs are developed and delivered in collaboration with community groups, schools, church groups, agencies, senior centers, and more.
Our FCS agents specialize in:
- nutrition at all stages of life
- food safety practices
- value-added food products
- family resiliency and healthy relationships
- youth development
- home management and consumer education
- financial literacy
- disaster preparedness
Community Development
Our Community Development Division work to improve quality of life in our community by helping to manage change. Our agents do this through two means:
- Process expertise: Serving as facilitators to a range of community conversations about information and knowledge levels on key island issues.
- Content expertise: Helping community residents, government, and non-government organizations address how to deal with those issues.
Our job is to make sure that we bring the community in – taking research, taking science and converting it into something that we all understand and that we can all apply.”
Anita Borja Enriquez, President of UOG
UOG Extension is a function of UOG's Land Grant, housed within the UOG College of Natural & Applied Sciences and supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the government of Guam.
